Bread, Waffles & Tarts in Maastricht

It's been exactly 6 days since I arrived in Maastricht and I finally got my internet sorted out!! Yipeee!
Anyway, lets get to business and start from the beginning!

I started with a 13.5 hours long flight from KUL (Kuala Lumpur) to AMS (Amsterdam) and from there, I took a 2.5 hours long train to Maastricht, a city located at the southern part of the Netherlands. There, I hopped on a bus to St. Annadal, where one of the Maastricht University Guesthouse is located. It took me two days to settle into my room but now, it feels right and comfy!

My first class started yesterday and I enjoyed every bit of it. Even the journey there! The Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience is on the other side of the Meuse/Maas river and for newbies like me, it takes about 20 minutes by bike. Yes, it can get chilly and wet but riding a bike around Maastricht is a wonderful way to experience the local culture!

Over the weekend (before the classes start), my dear friend, Tink, and I went to explore the city centre and see what Maastricht had to offer. From what we gathered, there are 365 bars around (one for every day of the year!), the streets are really confusing, people here love their bread & pastries and everything's closed on Sundays (including the grocery stores!!).

Imagine walking around the city with the smell of waffles lurking at almost every corner you turn!

And don't even bother fighting the temptation because you'll be constantly reminded!

If waffles don't tickle your fancy, how about some tarts?

If I'm not mistaken, this bakery mills their own spelt flour behind the store!! I wish I could tell you more about it but I'm no good at reading Dutch! :P

I love people who take their bread seriously. Unlike the mass produced ones, these are good and wholesome breads with lots of care and love injected into them!! Ever since I arrived, I've been living off bread and I plan to continue doing so!

My home till the end of this month!

I'll be heading off to class soon but I'll leave you with this picture to ogle upon till my next post!! :P

Are you a bread person??
Tarts or waffles??

  3. My mom just bought a breadmaker and she started making bread because she is very against all the chemical and preservatives in our local bread. :P So I get to ask her to customise my favorite whole meal with sunflower seeds. I'm sure you get spoilt with so many choices there hehe! I cannot choose between tarts and waffles O.O

    1. Yes! I love making my own bread too!!! But I don't have the time :P I always get my bread from Hiestand (the one in Mont' Kiara but I think there's on in Bangsar Village) because they bake their bread every morning AND their breads are SUPER YUMMY!!!! Completely chemical and preservative free! hehe
