Koko Black, Carlton

During my first year in Melbourne, I went absolutely crazy with all the chocolate specialty stores- Koko Black, Max Brenner, Lindt Cafe, Chokolait, Cacao... and the list goes on. I blame the cold weather for kick starting my hot chocolate craze. There's something about it that keeps you warm and fuzzy in the inside while the chilly Melbourne wind blows past your face.

Among all the stores I've been to, there is one that keeps pulling me back for more and that is none other than Koko Black. I can still remember the sense of euphoria that swept across my tingling tastebuds when I first sipped their Belgium hot chocolate. However, for some unfortunate reason, I did develop a mild case of lactose intolerance since the beginning of last year and my hot chocolate journey had to end.

During my latest trip to Koko Black, you could only imagine my excitement when I spotted Soy Hot Chocolate in their menu!! I wasn't too sure if they were offering soy hot chocolate before (and I feel silly for not asking!) but now, I know! :D

[Note: I haven't been carrying my camera around so for now, please bear with my iPhone photos!)

Chocolate and Orange Blossom Mille Feuille
Delicate layers of compressed puffed pastry, chocolate and orange blossom cream

The best part about this was the thin and delicate layer of caramel on top of the mille feuille! It was like cracking into a creme brûlée and it gave each mouthful a sweet crunch. I love that the hint of orange blossom lightened up the rich & dark chocolate and added a citric note to the otherwise sweet dessert.

 Chocolate Moelleux
Soft-centered pudding baked fresh to order, served with raspberry espuma

The molten cake was baked to order so, it came warm and gooey! When I was ordering, I couldn't decide between this and the chocolate beignets. I trusted my instincts and went with this AND I definitely got it right!! The raspberry foam did cut down some of the richness but I'd rather have it plain by itself :P

Is it even possible to resist this?!

And of course, no trip to Koko Black is ever complete without their hot chocolate.

  1. it's nice to have a cafe that makes you wanna keep returning, over and over. i'm not quite sure i have that in KL. and i like how you talk about the wind in melbourne driving you into a warm, chocolatey cafe. the hot, dusty wind in KL would just drive me into any shopping mall, heh! :D
